The late summer sun sweetens more than peaches in the South Carolina upcountry. These long, lazy days make a ripe time for a getaway to send summer off in style and start your search for a perfect fall escape.

Superb Spartanburg

Set yourself up in Spartanburg where the Clevedale Historic Inn & Gardens offers a luxury-laced stay in three traditional rooms and one converted 1947 caboose. Built in 1913, the home has a stately presence and gardens ideal for a coffee-accompanied morning wander. Breakfasts feature in-season South Carolina fruits, and to taste a few more, make your way to Fisher’s Orchard, in Greer, or Strawberry Hill Farm, in Chesnee; peaches are pickable until early-September and their orchards are bursting with sun-ripened fruit. Relax in the urban oasis of Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve, five miles from the Inn, before settling in at Heirloom for a meal that puts the flavors of South Carolina front and center.

Foothills Farms

In Landrum, the Blue Ridge foothills rise from the plains, and at The Red Horse Inn, you’ll have mountain views to share with your special someone, live local music, and the opportunity to sip wine with new friends: fuzzy, friendly alpacas. Explore the rolling hills on your way to Peach Country, in Campobello, where you can buy peaches by the bushel or make a reservation for a pick-your-own experience. At Blue Wall Preserve, a patch of woodlands noted for birdwatching, trails lead to a waterfall and join the statewide Palmetto Trail. Dinner at Harvest House delivers bold South Carolina flavors using fruit, veggies, and more from nearby farms and ranches.

Lovely Lakeside Lounging

Wind down with a stay at Sunrise Farm Bed & Breakfast, in Salem. This 1890 farmhouse sits on 10 picturesque acres with hobby farm and manicured landscaping. Stay in farmhouse bedrooms or one of the private cottages on the property. Here, you’re only 10 minutes from Lake Jocassee and Lake Keowee, perfect for fishing, paddling or motoring the lakes, and a refreshing swim to escape the last of summer’s heat. Add a drive along the Falling Waters Scenic Byway for big views of the Blue Ridge and side treks to photo-worthy waterfalls. Stop by The Happy Berry, in Six Mile, on the eastern shore of Lake Keowee, for late-season blackberries, figs, and more. Cap off your stay with a casual dinner at Crave Kitchen, in Salem, where locals and lake crowds gather for burgers, cocktails, and hand-made pasta.
