It’s likely we all know someone who has experienced real-life stress from car troubles and raised a hand or two for help when least expected—it may be a friend, co-worker, neighbor or family member.

Similarly, there’s probably someone in our closest circle who could benefit from the exclusive discounts and services that come standard with a AAA Membership. In either situation, there’s a way you can get rewarded for extending the peace of mind you’ve come to know and love from AAA to someone you care about.

Through the AAA Refer a Friend program, you and your ‘friend’ can earn 20 AAA Dollars that can be redeemed for cash back and more. With this program, there’s no limit on the number of people you can refer and you’ll earn AAA Dollars for each referral who joins.

How to refer a friend to AAA

Referring a friend to AAA is simple and can be completed in one of two primary ways:

  • You can copy and share a personalized link via e-mail or social media with your friends.

  • You can print or e-mail a referral card to a friend.

  • You can also contact AAA by phone at 1-800-222-1134 to get more information or to make a referral.

Upon successful sign-up using the link or card you provided, you and your friend earn 20 AAA Dollars each. Note that the program requires both the referring and new primary member to reside in AAA Auto Club Group territory. Check your state’s coverage here

You’ll be notified via e-mail or mail that you’ve earned AAA Dollars once your friend or family member joins AAA through your referral, so there’s no guesswork on your part. The AAA Dollars you earn are then deposited in your AAA account and can be applied to your next annual membership renewal dues, redeemed for cash back or used on select AAA purchases including membership upgrades, gift memberships, the addition of associate members to your account and more. Likewise, the friend you refer will also know they've earned AAA Dollars through an email or mail notification once their new membership is active. They can view their AAA Dollars balance by logging into their account on AAA.com or through the AAA Mobile app

Can a friend use my AAA instead of purchasing their own membership?

It’s not uncommon for people to ask, “Can a friend use my AAA?” and “Can I use a friend’s AAA?” To clarify, you can use your AAA Membership to help a friend with their car if you’re present with them at the scene of the breakdown, you’re a card-carrying member and they’re not able to call for help themselves.

In all other circumstances, your friend or family member would require their own AAA Membership to receive roadside assistance services from AAA. If the situation were reversed, where you needed your friend’s AAA, the same stipulations would apply.

Referring a friend vs. adding a family member: What’s the difference?

Existing AAA Members can add family members (such as a spouse, another adult in the home or children living at home or away at school) to their account for a reduced annual fee, allowing them to share in the benefits of the primary member; this is called an Associate Membership. While some limited-time offers exist within the referral program to include a free first year for associates, adding a family member is not typically part of the AAA Refer a Friend program.

When you refer a friend to AAA through the referral program, you’re brining a new, unaffiliated person into AAA, rewarding both you and the new member with AAA Dollars. Essentially, the friend you refer joins and pays their own membership dues.

Referring a friend: The ultimate expression of care

There’s no doubt that a AAA Membership evokes feelings of safety, security and peace of mind for more 60 million people, nationally. In fact, of members who’ve used AAA Roadside Assistance, 86% report that they are highly likely to recommend AAA. But when you refer a friend to join, you’re sending a personal message that you care—one that says, “I want you to have 24/7 roadside assistance, trusted travel expertise, unparalleled discounts and savings and the support of an organization that advocates for your safe return home each night.”

Think of the AAA Refer a Friend program as a AAA “friend coupon”—you reap rewards by spreading the word about one the nation’s most trusted names in roadside assistance and help a friend have a solid and reliable plan for the unexpected.
